Photos Of This Trip

Day 1 - By John

Early start, for some more than others, to get to Stanstead and beat the security queues - only to find Ryanair opened check-in less than 2 hours before take off. The queues were then so long that we had less than an hour to get through security - luckily it only took 10 minutes. With barely time to grab a sandwich we headed to the gate only to find the plane was 30 minutes late.

Landed in Trieste with a bump and the brakes hard on (think the runway was a bit short!) and met our host for the week, Sam. Only problem was the mini bus had a bust gearbox so the seats had to be bolted into his transit van! So we squeezed in and headed for the Italian/Slovenian border. Andy waved 7 passports at the border guard only to be asked to produce the van documents. After rummaging in the glove box he was unable to find them so Sam spent the next 30 minutes trying to talk his way out of it. Finally we got the all clear and headed north into the mountains.

When we arrived in Tolmin the boys jumped out and went to the tourist information centre. The girls who were very fed up waiting for them, decided to go and have an ice cream.

When we arrived at the Retreat aka 'Sam's Place', we had a heated debate about the rooms which was resolved by the toss of a coin. Sam managed to pull out 2 boxes of wine, white and red (5 litres each), which we then proceeded to drink while we discussed what we should do for the week. The boys decided to climb Mt Triglav on Thursday & Friday and the girls, the softer, nicer, safer trip to Lake Bohinj.

Sam's watersports mate took 4 of us on a tour of the village while Mark & Erica went for a run. Got back to a very nice dinner, much needed as we were all starving! Drank all of the white wine and half of the red, then it was off to the pub next door for a blueberry liqueur before heading to bed
